Poempig first became fascinated with Sufi poet, Rumi, 2 years ago when this poem was read over the radio. I do not know who translated this version. It is not in my copy of The Rumi Collection edited by Kabir Helminski. The power of this poem is that it speaks to all of us. Life is troubled. You do not decide which emotions will arrive at your doorstep each day. Yet each arrival can educate you about yourself.

This being human is a guesthouse

every morning a new arrival

a joy, a depression, a meannessRumi cover Correction

some momentary awareness

comes as an unexpected visitor.

 

Welcome and entertain them all!

Even if they’re a crowd of sorrows

who violently sweep your house

empty of its furniture.

Still treat each guest honorably

he may be cleaning you out

for some new delight!

 

The dark thought, the shame, the malice

Meet them at the door laughing

and invite them in.

Be grateful for whoever comes

because each has been sent

as a guide from beyond.
